SYRACUSE STAGE

Syracuse Stage Plaza is an interactive public space that creates a dynamic entry, a hangout space, and an outdoor performance venue.

The entrance to Syracuse Stage was an underutilized plaza, but the administration imagined it could be an active public space that celebrated theater.  So, we took point and assembled a local team that included a computer scientist, a civil engineer, a sensor expert, a wood worker, and a sound designer to create a truly unique urban performance space. Our goal- turn pedestrians and patrons into actors and the city into their stage. The primary path is embedded with forty step activated ‘singing’ pavers programmed for each show. These are complemented by eight LED mesh panels that get brighter as patrons move in and around them. People young and old find themselves going out of their way to dance between pavers and screens as they pass through the plaza.
